Deborah Brown is a contemporary stained glass artist based in London, UK.
Artist Background
Deborah’s journey with stained glass began in 1989 when she first took a stained glass course as a high school student in Northern California. In 1991, she moved to Santa Barbara to study Art and Psychology, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio and Psychology in 1995. During this time, she incorporated stained glass into an installation piece, which rekindled her passion for working with glass. She then took a local stained glass course to refine her techniques and invested in her first set of personal tools.
Learning the copper foil ‘Tiffany’ method of stained glass construction opened up a new world of creative possibilities, allowing Deborah to add greater detail and fluidity to her designs.
Deborah then pursued a Master of Science in Speech and Language Pathology and Audiology, earning her degree in 2001. In 2006, she moved to London with her husband to work for the NHS, and welcomed a daughter into their family in 2008.
Years later, when designing a window for their new home, Deborah rediscovered her love of creating glass art. She explains that “The process of creating with glass has had a profound impact on me, and I’ve found that I am at my best when pushing myself to bring new, original designs to life. There is a unique pride in transforming raw materials into beautiful works of art that can be enjoyed for generations to come”.
Inspiration
My designs are deeply influenced by both nature and art throughout history. I have a particular affinity for the Arts and Crafts Movement, both in post-Victorian England and the American Arts and Crafts movement (1880-1910). The art from this period is beautifully crafted using a variety of materials, including metal, wood, glass, tile, carpet, and textiles. Nature and simple forms are central to this style, which is also reflected in the architecture—one of my favourites being the Craftsman bungalow style. This type of architecture often featured built-in cabinets and shelves, allowing intricate wood and glass work to seamlessly integrate into the home’s design.
Inspiration also arises when observing existing window frames. For example, two of my early stained glass windows were designed for the bathroom and a transom window with five sections in the kitchen of our first home—a Craftsman bungalow in Oakland, California. I’m also drawn to the shape and size of cabinet windows, which can either mirror one another or depict a single, cohesive artistic scene.
I find it particularly exciting to work with clients and incorporate meaningful elements into my designs. The challenge of designing within specific parameters pushes me to achieve the best possible results. Stained glass not only enhances the window itself, but also transforms the entire room, as light filters through the colored and textured glass, casting reflections throughout the space.
Recently, I’ve been exploring the concept of backlit pieces to be displayed on walls. After participating in exhibits, I recognized the appeal of backlighting within box frames for interior design. I am currently experimenting with different methods to perfect this approach and expand my creative offerings.
Process
Each piece I create holds deep personal meaning for me, as does the entire process of making it. From the initial spark of inspiration and designing the pattern, to refining it for the window, every stage is a rewarding experience. I take great satisfaction in cutting the glass, foiling and soldering each piece, and then witnessing the first glimpse of light filtering through the glass. The final moment, when the window is installed in its permanent location, brings everything together in a truly fulfilling way.
The magic of light and colour is at the heart of my work. There’s a unique, exceptional feeling when I hold a new piece up to the light for the first time and see the full effect of the glass come to life. It’s a moment unlike any other.
